Welcome...
...to 'The Ancient Muse'.
Since the beginning of creation in all times and all places, stories have captured the imaginations of the young and the old savouring great memories, histories, parables and legends. The storytellers held great influence over their people as they were the keepers of history and great genealogists adept in reciting stories, poetry, legends and songs of heroic deeds. These smiths of the spoken word came to be known as the Bards, the guardians of the mysteries and the news bringers forewarning of battle and rewarding the bravest. It was also the Bards who kept the memories of the great ancestors alive....
The Flag Fen Eisteddfod is also in support of the National Year of Reading which aims to change the culture of reading in Britain forever by creating and encouraging life-long reading for pleasure. For more visit http://www.yearofreading.org.uk/
We've seen ‘Battle of the Bands' but now it's time for ‘The Battle of the Bards', an ancient competition which can be traced back to the 12th Century and only part of the weekend's offerings, as the Fens prepares to spring to life in a profusion of ancient tales, poetry and performance.
